Starting Up or Tuning Up?

One of the most frequent questions we get at the Chamber is: where do I find resources and information for small business owners? Whether you're starting up or tuning up, here are some places to look.
  • Loans
  • Business Planning and Advisory Services
Based in Sechelt, Community Futures is a non-profit, federally and provincially funded organization focused on developing the economic and entrepreneurial capacity of the Sunshine Coast. It supports new and existing business development through business counselling and assistance, loans, and business planning.

Small Business BC
  • Free Online Tools and Resources
  • Seminars and Webinars
  • Advisory Services
  • Assistance with Business Registration
Located at the Waterfront Skytrain Station in Vancouver, Small Business BC's mandate is to assist entrepreneurs in starting up small business ventures, and to help small businesses grow and improve profitability.

BC Resource Centre for Small Business
  • Information on permits and licenses
  • Checklists and templates
  • Links to services and publications
This government service has resources and tools to help small business--with a focus on breaking down barriers to doing business though programs such as the Mobile Business Licence, BizPaL and Building Skills for Small Business.
  • Training and mentoring
  • Business Loans
  • Buiness advice
This program has offices in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, offering workshops, business advice and financial support to BC women who are starting, growing or purchasing a business.
The Small Business Accelerator, an initiative of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia, is curated by professional librarians to help you to research your business idea. Use this website to write a business plan, gauge your growth potential, learn about market trends and to discover new opportunities.

Doing Business with the Federal Government
The Government of Canada purchases approximately $20 billion of goods and services each year. The top 10 commodities supplied by companies in the Pacific Region include Architect and Engineering services, Custodial Operations and related services, Environmental services, Instruments and Laboratory Equipment and various R and D work, professional services including consulting services and IT services.
On Oct. 10 the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME) came to the Sunshine Coast to give a seminar on How to Sell to the Government of Canada. A PDF of the presentation is available here. For further information, contact OSME.
We hope to repeat this event in early 2014--if you are interested, please contact the Gibsons Chamber.
